Finnish-American photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen has been awarded the Académie des beaux-arts Photography Award – William Klein in recognition of his lifetime achievement and lasting contribution to photography. Following laureates such as Raghu Rai, Annie Leibovitz, and Graciela Iturbide, Minkkinen joins a distinguished group celebrated for their major impact on the field.

This prestigious award honors a career spanning fifty years, marked by an artistic and spiritual commitment to exploring the relationships between the body, landscape, and nature.

FEP congratulates Minkkinen and is grateful to have collaborated with him. We are particularly proud to have produced the first museum touring exhibition dedicated to his work. This monographic exhibition, entitled Saga: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, was curated by A. D. Coleman and Todd Brandow. It premiered in the United States in 2005 and toured five venues across Europe and North America, including Canada.

FEP appoints Julie Bonzon as Associate Curator. She joins Todd Brandow, Executive Director, and Justine Chapalay, Associate Curator, forming the leading trio of FEP’s projects.

Justine Chapalay is Associate Curator at FEP. She holds an MA in History of Art and specializes in contemporary art and photography.

For five years at FEP, she has managed exhibitions and publications in collaboration with renowned curators including William Ewing, Holly Roussell, and Taous Dahmani. These projects span major institutions such as The Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Taipei Fine Arts Museum; Jeu de Paume; Saatchi Gallery; Kunsthalle München, and Museum für Gestaltung, Zurich. Recent collaborations include monographs dedicated to Thomas Demand and Anastasia Samoylova—and thematic exhibitions such as Civilization, an international project featuring over 130 photographers. She is currently curating A Worldwide Web, an exhibition exploring insects through the work of 50 contemporary image-makers.

Chapalay also works independently, providing her expertise in cultural project management to institutions in Switzerland and internationally.

Julie Bonzon is Associate Curator at FEP. She holds a PhD in Art History, specializing in South African photography, and has led research and curatorial projects since 2015 on decolonial representation and contemporary lens-based practices, particularly in African contexts. She is the author of The Market Photo Workshop in South Africa and the ‘Born Free’ Generation (Routledge, 2023).

Bonzon has collaborated with institutions worldwide, including Magnum Photos, The Photographer’s Gallery, Photo Élysée, Fondation H, and the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, and served as Director of Photography at Messums London. In 2020, she founded The Photographic Collective to champion lens-based artists working in Africa.

She teaches in the Department of Art History at the University of Zurich and contributes regularly to publications on contemporary photography. At FEP, she is preparing shows on Nadav Kander and Slim Aarons, and the thematic exhibition The Taxonomy of Shadows: On Photographic Collectivism.

We are delighted to announce that photographer Nadav Kander has been awarded a grant by the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation. This grant will contribute to the exhibition “Nadav Kander: The Edge of Things”, the first major survey of Kander’s work. Curated by David Campany and produced by FEP, the exhibition begins its international tour at FOAM Amsterdam in September 2026. We congratulate Nadav on this well-deserved honor and look forward to an exhibition that will offer audiences around the world a fantastic opportunity to engage with the depth and breadth of his work.

Nadav Kander has made some of the most beautiful and celebrated photographs of recent times. BURTYNSKY: EXTRACTION/ABSTRACTION Makes Asian Debut at Seoul Museum of History

Seoul Museum of History—renowned for charting the city’s evolution from its origins to the present—will host the first large-scale exhibition of Edward Burtynsky’s works in Seoul. Bringing together local memory and global scale, BURTYNSKY: Extraction/Abstraction invites visitors to reflect on humanity’s profound impact on the planet and the resilience of cities.

Over the past decade, the museum has deepened its engagement with environmental challenges and crisis narratives through special programs such as the special exhibition Unprecedented Flood and the 11th European Film Festival (themed Stories for Challenging Times). This exhibition builds on this commitment, presenting four decades of Burtynsky’s practice that vividly documents industrial landscapes, resource extraction, and the intricate systems that sustain—and strain—modern life.

This exhibition has been organized by Seoul Museum of History in association with Saatchi Gallery and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography.

“Nadav Kander: The Edge of Things” is the first major survey of Kander’s contemplative, ethereal, and iconic work spanning four decades. Curated by David Campany, the exhibition begins its international tour at FOAM Amsterdam in September 2026.

In the last four years, “Thomas Demand: The Stutter of History” was hosted by the following five major institutions, each offering a new frame for Demand’s investigation into the intersections of history, images, and built forms:

“The High Life: Contemporary Photography and the Birds”, curated by William A. Ewing and Danaé Panchaud, recently closed at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota. Featuring 70 works by 50 photographers, the exhibition reveals how avian imagery transcends genres: from dedicated wildlife specialists to conceptualists and fashion visionaries. Together, these perspectives illustrates the enduring role of birds in contemporary visual culture.

We are pleased to report a very successful run of Civilization: The Way We Live Now at the Kunsthalle München, with a final tally of 110,000 visitors. As with each venue, the show evolved in Munich with the addition of 25 new works by 17 photographers. The next stop is the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich, where the exhibition will open in March 2026. Since 2018, Civilization has been shown in South Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, Britain, Taiwan, and Germany. Having produced the exhibition from Switzerland, we are especially proud to bring it “home” for its 10th venue! Stay tuned!

We are proud to present Anastasia Samoylova: Adaptation, the first major survey of contemporary American photographer Anastasia Samoylova, opening tomorrow at Saatchi Gallery, London. The Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography and Saatchi Gallery are proud to present ANASTASIA SAMOYLOVA: ADAPTATION, the first major survey of contemporary American photographer Anastasia Samoylova. Curated by Taous Dahmani, this exhibition will present works from five of Samoylova’s most significant series: ‘Landscape Sublime’, ‘Image Cities’, ‘FloodZone’, ‘Floridas’, and ‘Breakfasts’. The exhibition features compelling video work previously unseen in the UK.

In ADAPTATION, Samoylova directs her frank and curious gaze at evidence of the environment adapting to human intervention and, correspondingly, at our social and political resistance to respond to a rapidly changing planet. Her subjects – often pastel-hued, doused in refracting light and darkened by impenetrable shadow – speak to this push and pull. Viewers are lured to take a closer look; subtly challenged to consider the ways in which we are encroaching on the environment and alerted to the danger of denial.

Thomas Demand: The Stutter of History is opening this Sunday, June 30, at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

At first, the images Thomas Demand creates seem to depict the real world. A closer look, however, reveals that they are actually photographs of temporary sculptural re-creations. The artist often selects his source imagery from the news media, and he re-creates those images as life-size paper models. Then he photographs them and prints them at a monumental scale. Afterward, he destroys his models, leaving behind only their ghostly photographic doubles.

The internationally touring exhibition Thomas Demand: The Stutter of History is a landmark retrospective of the artist’s work, and the MFAH is the only venue in the U.S.

From June 7 to September 29, 2024 in Vichy, France, Nadav Kander presents “The Edge of Things”, an immersive exhibition of his work, combining installations, films and photographs, some of which have never been seen before. A master picture maker and a tireless experimenter, Kander searches for the unexpected resonance in people and places, those moments when something profound is revealed to the eye and the camera.

The photographer, who has rarely looked back, is also currently working on a major exhibition with the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography and with curator David Campany, sifting through four decades’ of constant image making. Cutting across genres and projects, the exhibition will draw out the hidden threads that connect all his work: the fragility of human existence, the passing of time, the grain of the everyday and the hope of something transcendent.

During the first week of June, the 2024 edition of the Todi Circle brought together thirteen highly-experienced photography world experts! Held once a year in Todi (Umbria, Italy), the Circle is a mix of curators, publishers, collectors, dealers, museum directors, educators, critics, historians, sponsors, auctioneers, directors of festivals, fairs and institutions – and of course, photographers. Co-organized by the FEP, this unique event is a highly unusual meeting of minds, held to reflect upon the state of photography. The Jut Art Museum, Taipei will host two sections of “Civilization: The Way We Live Now” at its satellite venue “Uncanny” from May 18 to June 30, 2024.

For the first time, the museum extends its exhibition to the space “Uncanny” at NOKE, with eight themes fully unfolding in the two exhibition venues. While the main venue features six themes, the satellite venue accommodates “ESCAPE” and “ALONE TOGETHER”, two themes that explore the collective state of mind of humankind in the global village.

After touring in major museums across Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy and the UK, “Civilization” will be on view in Taiwan until June 30. The exhibition features the work of contemporary photographers tracking the visual threads of humankind’s ever-changing, extraordinarily complex life across the globe.

“Flora Imaginaria” will be closing this Sunday, April 28 at the Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach, FL. 

Flowers have been a source of inspiration for photographers since the medium’s inception. Today, flower photography remains in full bloom as contemporary photographers continue the storied tradition of depicting floral motifs in novel ways. Flora Imaginaria features images shot over the last 30 years and is an ode to this historically important photographic subject. It explores the aesthetic and decorative qualities of flowers and their rich cultural history as symbols and motifs through many genres of photography, including still lifes, botanical studies, portraits, studies of the body, street photography, and surrealist collages.

Featured artists include Pedro Almodóvar, Valérie Belin, Daniel Gordon, Abelardo Morell, Vik Muniz, Viviane Sassen, and Martin Schoeller, along with a selection of emerging artists.

We are happy to announce the opening of the exhibition The Polaroid Project: At the Intersection of Art and Technology at the National Taiwan Normal University Art Museum in Taipei. After having been in Spain last year, the exhibition will be visible from the 9th of March to the 7th of June 2024.

We are delighted to announce that James Balog: Photographs from the Anthropocene will open this Saturday, September 16 at the Museum of Photographic Arts / San Diego Museum of Art, in California. The exhibition presents photographs that describe both the ancient cyclical patterns of the earth’s life forms and the impact of human activity on those forms and cycles. For four decades, Balog has studied ancient cultural assumptions about the relationship between humans and the rest of nature. Through innovative imagery, his projects interpret significant aspects of what has changed, what has survived, and what changes are projected for the future. His photographs reveal nature’s dazzling beauty as well as its capacity for destruction.

Thomas Demand: The Stutter of History is now on view at the Israel Museum of Jerusalem. The exhibition presents a career-wide survey of his work, the artist having spent almost three decades exploring the intersections of history, images, and architectural forms. In his large-scale photographic objects, history presents itself as banal, gnawingly disturbing facsimiles of places and episodes that we cannot quite identify. Demand has also conceived the design for the exhibition, as an integral part of his approach to artistic production. With his architectural use of wallpapers and temporary structures, he creates an immersive environment for the viewer in which image and world collide.

Civilization: The Way We Live Now is on view at Saatchi Gallery, London since June and will be closing soon! After four months, our show The Polaroid Project: At the Intersection of Art and Technology ended last week at the Fundación Barrié, Spain.

William Ewing and Barbara Hitchcock curated an exhibition that serves as a comprehensive overview of captivating, innovative, and triumphant Polaroid photographs created primarily during the latter half of the previous century, while also including contemporary examples. In addition to the artwork, the exhibition incorporates an array of diverse technological artifacts that provide an equally enlightening perspective on the tools and techniques instrumental in enabling this artistic and cultural revolution.

Last week, the 2023 edition of the Todi Circle brought together twelve highly-experienced photography world experts! After three months, our show Beyond Fashion at the IPFO in Switzerland closed successfully last week.

Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, this exhibition unites the creations of renowned photographers of our time like Miles Aldridge, Nick Knight and Ellen von Unwerth with a fresh generation that has reexamined the possibilities of fashion photography.

Having toured in major museums across Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand, France and Italy, Civilization is now on view at Saatchi Gallery in London! The exhibition offers an unprecedented look at humankind’s rapidly mutating collective life across the globe through the eyes of many of the world’s finest photographers. Civilization: The Way We Live Now showcases more than 350 prints and includes a new selection of works curated especially for this London edition at Saatchi Gallery.

Last week, Le Monde dedicated a full page to our exhibition Thomas Demand: The Stutter of History, currently on view at Jeu de Paume, Paris. The article by journalist Claire Guillot pays great tribute to the uniqueness of the German artist’s photographic work, insisting on the “spectacular scenography” of the exhibition, which brings together large prints and impressive wallpapers. We are pleased to announce that our exhibition “Civilization” opened this weekend at Musei San Domenico, Forlì, Italy. Featuring more than 130 artists from all around the world and nearly 300 photographs, this major project was curated by William Ewing and Holly Roussell. After Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand and France, Italy is the sixth country to host the exhibition. CIVILIZATION: VIVERE, SOPRAVVIVERE, BUON VIVERE can be seen until January 8, 2023.

After a year-long break due to COVID, our exhibition “Beyond Fashion” is back on tour this summer! It successfully opened one month ago at ALT.1, Hyundai Seoul, Korea, on June 17. With an innovative and interactive scenography, the exhibition has already welcomed thousands of visitors and is visible until September 25.

Curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer, the exhibition brings together the works of today’s most acclaimed fashion photographers as well as the newest generation who have looked anew at the potential of fashion photography and created an imagery that goes far beyond fashion.

Our exhibition “William Wegman: Being Human” successfully made its return home after ending its journey with a last stop in Korea at the Seoul Arts Center from September to December 2021. The exhibition was presented for the first time at Les Rencontres d’Arles in France in 2018 before travelling to five more venues in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland and Netherlands. Featuring 100 photographs of his Weimaraner muses, most of them exhibited for the first time, the retrospective explored various themes such as fashion, design, history, art genres and avant-garde movements.

Our exhibition Arnold Newman: Masterclass successfully opened at Kaunas Photography Gallery in Lithuania on November 27. It will remain on view until January 9, 2022 before continuing its route north to Salo, Finland.

On this occasion, curator William A. Ewing was invited to give a video tour of the exhibition in which he discusses the exceptional quality and uniqueness of the American photographer’s work.

From March to June this year, our exhibition Beyond Fashion was shown at Xie Zilong Photography Museum in Changsha, China. This latest venue was a major success, greeting more than 600,000 visitors, who had the chance to admire the work of the most acclaimed fashion photographers today, such as Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindbergh, Miles Aldridge and Ellen von Unwerth, among others.

The major publication dedicated to James Balog is selected as one of the best photographic books of the year by The Times (London). The Human Element: A Time Capsule from the Anthropocene, published by Rizzoli, presents four decades of Balog’s research and photography. The illustrated oversized 400 page catalogue comprises a major text by curator Anne Tucker.

We are thrilled to announce that Civilization – The Way We Live Now currently at the Mucem, Marseille is extended until August, 15. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the opening was delayed, but the exhibition could finally open to the public on May, 19. Civilization showcases more than 200 original prints by Massimo Vitali, Pieter Hugo, Lauren Greenfield, Wang Qingsong, Raphaël Dallaporta, Valérie Belin, Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer… Together, they draw a plural portrait of our time.

The exhibition has already greeted more than 20’000 visitors in Marseille (despite the fact that, during the first three weeks, the Mucem was limited to 50% attendance). If you can possibly imagine a trip to the south of France this summer, don’t miss the opportunity of seeing it!

The opening event of Civilization – The Way We Live Now at the Mucem, Marseille could only take place online in March as French museums were still closed due to Covid restrictions. But we are now delighted to announce that the exhibition is finally open to the public since the 19th of May! Swiss friends in the South, Ticino and neighbouring Italy : meet William Wegman’s canine characters at MASI Lugano now through Jan. 6th. With “Being Human”—a retrospective featuring thirty years of the contemporary artist’s large-scale Polaroid and print production—Wegman’s Weimaraners are poised to conquer Europe after stops in Australia and New Zealand. “Being Human” made its sensational début at Les Rencontres d’Arles in 2018 and will continue on to the Hague, NL in 2020.

Over five days this past June, 15 participants gathered in Umbria, Italy for this year’s Todi Circle, an intense if informal brainstorming meeting. A diverse group of experts in various fields—curators, dealers, collectors, historians, critics, academics and others—and of course photographers—reflected on a wide range of topics concerning the future of photography, while taking stock of the state of the art.

Coming into Fashion opened in Beijing on January 20 at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) with the support of Vogue China. The opening events included a fascinating panel discussion with Angelica Cheung, editor-in-chief Vogue China, FEP director Todd Brandow, and curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, moderated by UCCA director Philip Tinari.

After being seen by nearly 65,000 visitors in Taipei, Coming into Fashion is heading to Beijing to be presented at Ullens Center of Contemporary Art in association with Vogue China. It will open to the public on January 20th, 2017, with private viewings on January 18th and 19th.

On the heels of a successful Vik Muniz exhibition at Atlanta’s High Museum—where final attendance was 200,335—Sept. 30th saw the exhibition début at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University.

Coming into Fashion continues the Asian segment of its international tour with a venue in the Taiwanese capital. The exhibition was launched this month in Taipei together with the 20th anniversary Vogue Taiwan gala, at the Huashan Creative Park, and will remain on view until November 27, 2016.

Joshua Chuang, curator of Lee Friedlander Books & Photographs 1969-2015 has recently been named the Miriam & Ira D. Wallach Associate Director for Art, Prints and Photographs, and The Robert B. Menschel Senior Curator of Photography by the New York Public Library. The former chief curator of the University of Arizona’s Center for Creative Photography (CCP) will join the NYPL team in August, 2016.

Once more, a small group of specialists in the field of photography met in a secluded part of Umbria, Italy, to discuss burning issues related to the theme, “The Futures of Photography”. All agreed, it was a great success!

Buddhist temples, gardens and other historically significant sites serve as a backdrop for the fourth edition of Kyotographie, which features Coming into Fashion at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex. Also included among the exhibitions is Finnish photographer and frequent FEP collaborator Arno Rafael Minkkinen, via YKSI: Mouth of the River, Snake in the Water, Bones of the Earth, at the Ryosokuin (Kenninji Temple).

The fourth edition of KYOTOGRAPHIE international photography festival presents Coming Into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast at Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex. The exhibition, which traces the influence of fashion photography on visual culture through the Condé Nast archive, is one of 15 exhibitions viewed through the lens of connectivity, birth, life and death explored by the festival’s theme, The Circle of Life.

Arnold Newman: Masterclass is now on view at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida. The exhibition includes over 150 vintage black and white photographs which showcase Newman’s talent. It presents his most well-known portraits, in addition to early street photography, architectural studies, and still lifes, as well as sheets with zoom and crop marks, which have never been shown publicly.

The Coming into Fashion show opens today at the MARCO, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Monterrey. After having been shown at the Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City, the exhibition has been installed in a beautiful new space.

The Todi Circle convened again for the fourth year running at the Todi Castle Estate in Umbria. Each year the Circle brings together twelve experts in the field of photography for spontaneous conversations on our medium.

Our guests this year included Denise Bethel, David Campany, Joshua Chuang, Philip Gefter, Carlos Gollonet,
Katy Grannan, 
Mishka Henner, Marloes Krijnen, Richard Misrach, Priska Pasquer,
Andrew Sanigar, Leo Xu, and Francesco Zanot.

We were joined for our final event by Tobia Bezzola, director of the Folkwang Museum, Essen, the noted collector Thomas Walther from Zurich and curator Francesca Fabiani from MAXXI in Rome. As always, our brainstorming sessions on the “futures” of photography were extremely dynamic and fruitful.

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast opens on November 20 at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach

The ‘Coming into Fashion’ exhibition (“Zeitlos schön” in German) has opened in Zurich on July 10. The show is held in a beautiful environment on lake Zurich. The Museum Bellerive is part of the Museum für Gestaltung, Switzerland’s leading design and visual communication museum.

The Lorna Simpson show is held at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art until June 22. The exhibition presents more than 30 years of the artist’s work across the mediums of photography, film, video, and drawing.

The ‘Coming into Fashion’ exhibition opened in Paris on March 1st to great success after three evenings of private viewings to special guests. Vogue Paris is a partner of the exhibition presented at Palais Galliera. Curator Nathalie Herschdorfer talks about the show on French TV and radio:

More than 33,000 visitors so far at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. The Steichen show is held until March 2, 2014.

Following a critically acclaimed opening in Paris at the Jeu de Paume in May 2013, the Lorna Simpson exhibition has merited Simpson’s selection as a finalist for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2014. And on October 27, 2013, Arno Rafael Minkkinen received the prestigious Lucie Award for lifetime achievement in fine art photography.

During two whirlwind weeks in October, which took us to Australia and Germany, we launched Edward Steichen: In High Fashion at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and our Lorna Simpson retrospective at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. We were delighted with the first-rate installations at both institutions, as well as the enthusiastic public response.

From December 6 through 9, a selection of prints from COMING INTO FASHION will be exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, the most prestigious art show in the Americas.

Our Arnold Newman retrospective has opened on October 13 in the Fotomuseum Den Haag, that belongs to the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Today opens the Edward Steichen show at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati. An opportunity to discover the glamourous images made in the 1920s-1930s when Steichen was Chief Photographer at Vogue and Vanity Fair.

4500 visitors attended the opening at the C/O Berlin on August 17th.

The Coming into Fashion show opens at C/O Berlin on August 17th. The exhibition looks at 100 years of fashion photography and provides a unique opportunity to see the work of 75 photographers represented in the Condé Nast Archive in New York, Paris, London and Milan.

William A. Ewing will give two public “lessons” at the C/O Berlin on Saturday March 24 and on Sunday March 25 at 4 pm.

More than 2’000 visitors attended the opening at C/O Berlin on March 2nd.
